Candidates’ attitude towards the pandemic can affect hiring

Every day since Brazilians were forced to stay home to protect themselves from the new coronavirus, the news has revealed uninspiring figures about the employment situation in the country. Thousands of people have been laid off, and those who were unemployed have found it even harder to find a new job.

The golden question is: how to stand out among candidates and increase your chances of getting a job even during the period of social isolation?

There may be hundreds of different and correct answers to this question, but believe me: your attitude towards the restrictions imposed by the pandemic can make a difference for the recruiter.

Optimism is a competitive advantage during the pandemic

FOR Adriana Oliveira, HR director at Mercado Eletrônico, being positive in the midst of so many difficulties can make a big difference.

“In the interviews I conducted during the period of social distancing, I tried to find out whether the candidate in question was managing to be resilient in the face of this complicated crisis. When the interviewee demonstrates that he or she has managed to establish a routine with discipline, achieve small daily goals at home, and maintain hope and positivity as much as possible, he or she is already ahead of the game. Taking advantage of free time to take online courses, improve your skills, and even acquire knowledge in other disciplines also counts for many positive points. On the other hand, showing a lot of discouragement regarding the situation will not make recruiters interested in you.”

Being the protagonist of your own career is also a differentiator

At Mercado Eletrônico, it was possible to notice two types of responses when adopting home office for 100% of employees.

The vast majority began to produce even more and showed the ability to overcome adversity and act quickly in the face of the crisis. On the other hand, a small portion lost sight of the freedom that working from home offers and had difficulty defining goals and limits.

Adriana emphasizes, “we, recruiters, do not look for employees who dedicate 100% of their time to work and stop collaborating at home with their families, but we need to have confidence that that professional will be able to establish a routine of delivery and meeting deadlines and goals. And this even amid family demands – which may be more numerous with children and teenagers at home due to the suspension of in-person classes.”

The crisis caused by the new coronavirus requires employees to take a leading role in their careers and in developing socio-emotional skills. Therefore, if a professional is looking for a new position in the market, the advice is to start establishing a routine for yourself now, even if it is simple. Try to take refresher courses and always show yourself to be versatile and committed in interviews.
