The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a series of changes to people's and companies' lives. Resource management has undoubtedly been one of the most impacted by the need to quickly adapt to the new reality.

The office gave way to the home office, meetings started to be held via video calls and selection processes and hiring started to be done 100% online.

And in Mercado Eletrônico's HR department, it was no different: digital transformation, which is already in our DNA, resulted in more accurate decisions and a greater possibility of expanding diversity.

Last year, Mercado Eletrônico hired a total of 131 professionals from Brazil, Portugal, Mexico and the United States, and began 2021 with new opportunities in different areas. Despite the challenging scenario, the outlook is to continue growing.

Online environment strengthens people management in ME

“People first” is the value that occupies a priority position at Mercado Eletrônico. At such a delicate time, HR made efforts to ensure that employees could be safer at home, prioritizing everyone’s well-being.

HR also listened to the employee in a private manner, so that together they could seek alternatives to deal with the crisis. The intention is for everyone to feel comfortable talking about what they are feeling and together – HR and employee – to find the best way forward.

For Adriana Oliveira, Human Resources Director at ME, remote work is a positive transformation and has contributed to strengthening the company's values and culture.

“We have been careful to look at all employees and try to understand each one’s needs. At ME, the online environment, contrary to what was expected, has not only helped bring people closer together, but has also driven innovation. We have carried out various actions, such as live broadcasts with the CEO and events for birthdays. Here, we really enjoy sharing, listening and learning from others”, says Adriana Oliveira, HR director at ME.

ME hires and makes interns permanent amid pandemic

In 2020 alone, the ME hired 26 interns and most of them started their journey at the company working from home. And the most interesting thing about this new scenario was the new employees, before the end of the internship contract.

This reinforces how much the ME, even remotely, has identified and recognized talents, with the joint work of managers and HR.

ME collaborators, Caroline Gomes and Bruna Poit, talked a little about the experience of starting the internship remotely and being hired.

“I had no experience in the Sales area and had never worked remotely. I thought it would be complicated, but I learned everything very quickly, with the support of the team and the manager. I was surprised by the news of the hiring, especially because it was before I had completed a year of internship. I was very happy! ME is, by far, the best company I have ever worked for”, says Caroline Gomes, inside sales at ME.

“The closeness of the team helped me a lot during my remote internship. Online, it is easier to have access to people than in person, so I quickly became close to everyone. With the support of the area, I faced the challenges and challenged myself on many occasions. I dedicated myself and, for this reason, I was confident about the possible hiring”, says Bruna Poit, Support Technician at ME.

Post-pandemic: the changes that are here to stay

The entire world has undergone changes due to the coronavirus crisis, and remote work has emerged as an alternative for companies to maintain their operations. The positive impacts of remote work are mainly related to overcoming communication barriers – today, most people are online – and location barriers – working from anywhere.

“Human beings change and adapt very quickly. The pandemic and the imposition of remote work to help protect people brought about a maturity that we did not have. It was because of this that we were able to realize all the possibilities of online work, that it is possible to be productive, help people and help yourself. It is possible to be happy working from home”, adds Adriana, Human Resources Director at ME.

On the rise in the country, home office is surprising people and overturning concepts. Surely, these transformations will remain when everything is back to normal, right? From now on, the world of work will never be the same again. Thank goodness!
