Agile Methodology: what methods does Mercado Eletrônico use in its processes?

When we think about project management and innovation, agile methodology is at the top of the trends. We have already addressed the subject here on the blog a few times, but now we will address the topic from its origin.

After all, what is agile methodology? What are the premises behind this method? What types does Mercado Eletrônico use to manage and optimize its projects?

Read on!

What is agile methodology?

Agile methodology is a set of techniques and practices to accelerate the delivery of value in the development of products and projects. The idea behind the concept is to make processes simpler, faster and more flexible. In this way, companies, in addition to being able to speed up deliveries, save time, money and a lot of effort.

When it was created, its initial objective was simply to speed up software development. However, the idea was so innovative that, today, different methods dominate the technology market and revolutionize business areas.

Among its main characteristics, we can highlight:

  • Continuous process improvement;
  • Cooperation between teams and clients;
  • Performance through delivery sprints and high quality;
  • Flexibility in project scope;
  • Adaptation and creation of value according to customer needs.

Agile Manifesto: the premises behind the concept

O agile manifesto It emerged in early 2001, when a group of renowned developers met in Utah, in the United States, to discuss ways of developing, in order to optimize processes based on their project experiences.

At this meeting, professionals signed a document called “Manifesto for Agile Software Development”, which established some principles of the agile methodology, in addition to 4 key foundations:

  1. People and interactions over processes and tools;
  2. Working software over comprehensive documentation;
  3. Collaboration with clients above contract negotiations;
  4. Responding to change, rather than following a plan.

What agile methodologies does Mercado Eletrônico use in its processes?

Mercado Eletrônico has been using agile methodologies since 2015. In our processes, we use the framework scrum and the method Kanban to deliver faster solutions adapted to customer needs.

The implementation of the two work methodologies was led by the company's own professionals. The action served as training for work based on employee engagement and brought direct benefits to the company and its customers.

In addition, we use other practices that help us throughout the life cycle of products and projects. In the “Discovery” process, which occurs before starting development, for example, we use the Design Thinking and DesignSprint.

Learn more about the methodologies:

scrum

Scrum is a management framework to accelerate the delivery of value in the development of products and solutions.

The product or customer representative, the Product Owner, creates a list of priorities, usually called a backlog. The activities are then distributed to the Scrum Team, which starts the sprints (development time intervals).

At the end of each stage, reviews, activity adjustments and validation are carried out.

In ME, Scrum teams use Retrospective ceremonies to discuss improvements that help them gain more integration and harmony, contributing to the team's maturity.

We have a diverse team with expertise in back-end, front-end, testing, functional analysis, design, and an important role we created called “Delivery Leader.” This role is performed by a senior technology professional who is tasked with supporting teams in estimating and executing development. This role has contributed significantly to knowledge acquisition and sharing.

Kanban

Kanban is an organizational method that aims to increase productivity and optimize the completion of tasks and deliveries.

Kanban’s versatility allows it to be introduced incrementally and appropriately into all types of organizations, without fear of over-commitment or culture shock. This makes Kanban easy to implement into any business model, as there is no need for major changes.

In ME, Kanban teams follow a phased model with demand analysis and understanding activities that we call “UpStream”. In other words, all the activities in the stages that precede development to ensure that user stories are “ready” for the next cycle that we call “DownStream”. DownStream contains development activities until the stories are implemented in the production environment.

Kanban teams also hold daily meetings to monitor activities and use the board, making the work flow visible to the entire organization.

Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a design methodology that is useful for solving problems, whether they are complex, poorly defined or even unknown.

Throughout the process, Design Thinking seeks to gain insights. These can reveal new and unexplored ways of looking at problems and developing solutions, as well as simple and effective ways of implementing them.

In the Design Thinking process, the client is involved in several stages, so that Mercado Eletrônico teams can understand their needs and how our solutions can help them.

DesignSprint

Design Sprint quickly aligns teams around a shared vision with clearly defined goals and deliverables. It is a tool to develop a hypothesis, prototype an idea, and test it quickly with the least investment possible and in as real an environment as possible.

The process is cyclical and offers companies the chance to create something from scratch in a short space of time. This is when reality is represented, albeit in a simplified way, to provide customer validation and testing before implementation. The idea is to achieve effective and error-free projects.
